Smith Center
Beautifying the city and preserving it
natural environment has been the goal of the Smith Center PRIDE
program.

Collier mini-park, located on Main Street, had been neglected for a
long period of time. Through PRIDE, the park has been cleaned up and
facilities repainted. The park was landscaped and four benches were
added. The Over 60 Club donated funds for a flag pole to be placed in
memorial of Cleo Hopper. What was once an eyesore has now become a
beautiful mini park in downtown Smith Center. The park has become the
focal point for community Christmas decorating and events. Throughout
the other seasons, it serves as a quiet and restful spot for meditation
or relaxation.
The city of Smith Center took notice of the improvements and PRIDE
asked if they would consider cleaning up and maintaining the roadside
park along HWY 36. Due to state budget restraints, the park had not
been maintained for the last fifteen years. Through small grants and
fund raisers PRIDE was able to accomplish the project. With the park
facelift, Smith Center residents and visitors are now able to enjoy the
park and learn about the history of Smith Center through the historical
kiosk.
Other PRIDE projects include store front beautification and
establishing a walking trail. Dave Stortz, Smith Center PRIDE chairman,
stated, “PRIDE works as a motivator. Businesses and individuals
see the work we are doing and decide they should also do some
improvements.”
Smith Center has an elderly population so many residents are not able
to assist with the physical aspects of improvements. But through
monetary donations, providing items for bake sales, or bringing
refreshments to workers at the various sites they are able to
contribute. They express their appreciation and are hopeful that future
residents will be able to enjoy the beauty and natural environment of
the community as they knew it.
