Community Success Stories

Lakin

Lakin PRIDE has been in existence for over fifteen years. In that span of time the committee has completely revamped two public parks in the city, Ad McVey Park and Osborn Park. These improvements included a walking path and a skate board facility, and a gazebo at Ad McVey. Both Ad McVey and Osborn parks received new decorative lights and light poles, new playground equipment, picnic pavilions, and extensive landscaping. In addition to improvements at the parks, PRIDE installed a historic windmill at the junction of Highways 50 and 25 in the city, built an information booth at the same location, and completed other projects that enhanced the highway entrances to the city and the downtown area.

PRIDE has enhanced and made public parks more usable. Along with other PRIDE accomplishments and projects, public awareness was raised on the importance of making the community more recreational functional. Through its fundraising efforts, hamburger feeds, duck drops and so forth, memorials and grants; PRIDE was able to provide a lot of improvements to the community without using any public funds, with the exception of occasional in-kind assistance from the city. PRIDE was also able to partner with the public schools in providing help with certain PRIDE projects. PRIDE is a visible organization in Lakin. Its members receive many complements from citizens on a job well done.

None of the projects mentioned above, at least to the same extent, would have been accomplished without PRIDE involvement.
