Ford Park Renovations

The community of Ford found themselves in a good situation a couple of years ago. The Dodge City Ford County Development Corporation approached the community about grant funds for park improvements. The reason Ford was selected is because Ford is a small community, the need was present, the park improvements were a doable project in a relatively short time period, and it could have a large impact on the community.

In order to use the funds, Ford had to raise a dollar for dollar cash match. Funds were raised in a four month time period. They solicited donations from the local businesses, held fundraisers and the city also contributed.

The project took a lot of volunteer man power. Trees were removed, the old playground equipment taken out, and the grounds cleaned up. Once the site was readied, new equipment was put in place and 35 five trees were planted. The drastic change in appearance of the park caught attention.

As a result of the improvements, more kids now play in the park and travelers stop as they go through town. The project also changed the attitude of community. Folks watched what was happening and as they saw results, they became more willing to donate funds to the project. The desire to perform volunteer service also increased. The city support increased and the city is now going to install rubberized mats and sidewalks for the park. But probably one of the most significant impacts of the project was that the community became aware of services available to them. As they move forward with wider resource base, they will be able to accomplish even greater things.
