From the words of Cassie Treaster from the Community Capital Award Application for Natural Capital:

At the Pride meeting in September 2009 Cindy Strickland brought the idea to the meeting of doing a Flower Garden by the Post Office.  Before, there was a bunch of flowers there, which an Alden resident took care of.  But as she became older she could no longer take care of them.  Therefore it was very run down.  Since the area is right beside our Post Office everyone had to see it, when they went to get there mail every day.

After some planning, an ice cream social to raise money, and some donations we were able to start the project.  The first step was to clean the area completely out.  Scott Oden tilled and leveled it, then Cindy Strickland, Boyd Hendricks framed the pathways.  When the cement arrived there were several people from the community that help, to name a few Boyd, Drew, Tom, Scott, and Russ.  The last thing to do was put in the flowers; Cindy did most of the planting with some help from Barb.  The project was completed with a total of 30 volunteer hours put into it.

When we hold the Ice Cream Social we raised $200, that money plus another $100 from Pride went to the cement.  Alma Fair bought all of the flowers, and Council on Aging bought the bench.

Once the project was finished in May of 2010 the community loved it!  It is a beautiful sight to look at in the blooming season; it has made the Main road in town look so much better.  It feels like there is so much life in the community.  It has been such a blessing to have all the wonderful help in the community.
